Knowledge is power and its free too!

A compilation of best free online courses, classes, lectures, podcasts and more

Knowledge is power, but we need not spend much to get knowledge. There are lot of universities and websites that make their courses/lectures available for everyone to use for free. These top ranked universities and websites bring together amazing professors, thought provoking topics, tons of useful information and an opportunity to expand your mind without even leaving your home. I have provided the links to these free online courses, classes & resources along with a brief description (mostly quoted from that site itself). Let me know if I have missed something. I found these resources very useful, hope you will too!

I have categorized the links as follows:

  1. University specific links – variety of subjects : This is a list of universities that make most of the subjects taught at that university (graduate and undergraduate level material) available online, free of charge. These materials include lecture videos, handouts, homework and even exams.
  2. University specific links – specialized or limited content : This is a collection of universities that offer not traditional course materials, but invited speeches and articles. There might be some traditional courses offered too but these have restricted access.
  3. Open Course Ware Consortium : This is a collection of all the universities or institutions in the world that have joined together to provide their lectures/courses online. To be a member of this consortium, the universities should have at least 10 courses available online. I have provided a partial list of universities in the USA that are members of this consortium. There is a link to the entire list as well.
  4. General Collections: These are not universities, but websites that provide a wealth of information on various subjects.

I am down with the flu, this is one of my articles from my first few months of blogging when I had only a couple of visitors. I have updated and reposting it in the hope that it will benefit more people now. I will be back with the “Financial price stay at home moms pay” on Wednesday.

Your timing is impeccable! I was talking to a colleague and friend about this in general. I am going to forward the link to him today. He teaches AP Physics in the Magnet program at our school. I know he will use it. Thanks.

Thanks so much for an awesome list of resources. This will be so handy. I live in Canada but I am going to look and see if there are any of these courses I could take for my job here.

You are right- education is power. The more you know the better decisions you can make.

Nice! I left school at 16 but still consider myself educated. Reading is key to that. I’m especially interested in the MIT stuff (going to look at it soon) and the ItunesU.

Ooh I like the link to the foreign language courses. They didn’t have Hindi which I want to learn a few phrases of but that have TONS of others. I think it’s great that so many distinguished colleges have all of these free online courses and channels. -Sydney
